Experimental conditions are the subsets of an experiment that define the relevant experimental manipulation.

CONTRASTS

In the Cognitive Atlas, we define a contrast as any function over experimental conditions. The simplest contrast is the indicator value for a specific condition; more complex contrasts include linear or nonlinear functions of the indicator across different experimental conditions.

INDICATORS

An indicator is a specific quantitative or qualitative variable that is recorded for analysis. These may include behavioral variables (such as response time, accuracy, or other measures of performance) or physiological variables (including genetics, psychophysiology, or brain imaging data).

User Discussion

"What is the difference between Short-term-memory (STM)and working memory (WM)? The complex span tasks have been suggested to measure WM whereas simple span tasks have been shown to measure STM (Engle, 1999). I have read papers that use the term WM but use tasks that measure STM. It is important to establish a clear understanding of the difference between these two abilities and tasks that measure each. "

"I agree that it would be good to have some additional clarification regarding the STM/WM distinction. Are you suggesting that we strike working memory from the list of concepts measured by this task?"
