Experimental conditions are the subsets of an experiment that define the relevant experimental manipulation.

CONTRASTS

In the Cognitive Atlas, we define a contrast as any function over experimental conditions. The simplest contrast is the indicator value for a specific condition; more complex contrasts include linear or nonlinear functions of the indicator across different experimental conditions.

INDICATORS

An indicator is a specific quantitative or qualitative variable that is recorded for analysis. These may include behavioral variables (such as response time, accuracy, or other measures of performance) or physiological variables (including genetics, psychophysiology, or brain imaging data).

User Discussion

"How specific should ERPs in the indicator section be, e.g. just "P3," or "occipital P3," or "occipital P3 amplitude"?"
MLewis (about five years ago)
"I would be as specific as one needs to be to relate to specific papers - thus, if different papers report different kinds of P3 and those are differently relevant to this task, then they should be described separately."
RPoldrack (about five years ago)

"I think part of the philosophy of CogAt is to avoid a tautological relationship between concepts (or phenomena) and tasks such that one could say that "the attentional blink task measures attentional blink." The bibliography here could be migrated to the concept of attentional blink instead, and its associated tasks could include those like the RSVP."
MLewis (about five years ago)
"I agree with this - attentional blink is a phenomenon, not a task per se. "
RPoldrack (about five years ago)
"Maybe this page would best be renamed "rapid serial visual presentation task," but that page already exists (albeit without content)."
